Room 1 - David Lay

Portland
by David Lay

David Lay

David Lay worked for most of his working life as a scenic artist and designer in theatre. He took a studio in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter in 2009 (Kent, UK). The following year with Maryanne Traylen he co- founded Pavement Pounders CIC to devise and manage arts and heritage projects and in 2017 Scribblers and Daubers LTD. to market his visual art and Maryanne’s writing.
Pavement Pounders have since 2010 held many workshops on subjects as diverse as transcribing oral history audio files to drawing with charcoal. Most recently we were with our legendary collaborator Lazlo Walnut, tutors for the "Folkestone Is An Art School" event organised for the 2017 Folkestone Triennial by artist Bob and Roberta Smith.
Since tumbling into fine art David has exhibited widely in London and Kent (UK). Most recently, October 2017, he took part in "Sea Edge" with several other artists in Hythe, Kent (UK).
He has undertaken many commissions and is happy to accept more.
He does not pontificate on art having come from a generation brought up to believe that visual artists should be seen and not heard.

Artist's statement:

Artist’s statements can sometimes be far more impressive than their work. Mindful of this I shall say only that I have found over the years that I can best convey my feelings about the visual world through tone and texture. Much of my work is therefore either in monotone or with a deliberately restricted colour palette.
