Lisa Hawkins

I come from London but now live in Margate in Kent, which has become my home. This is a place I feel very connected to and has inspired me greatly with its wild winds and turbulent seas great expansive skies, cliffs and marshes.

I work for Canterbury Christ Church University art department where I am also completing my MA in Fine Art. I have exhibited widely in London and the south east of the UK, and will be participating in exhibitions in Europe later in 2010.

Artist's statement:

My paintings are about places and in my work I attempt to explore the human experience of being in this world.

I believe that through contemplation places can reveal secrets about themselves, where it is possible to glimpse other worlds “past present and future”.

I love colour and rhythm and from my drawings I work in the studio using memory in an attempt express my emotions and feelings about the place.

If possible, I like to return time and again in order to build a multi layered “web” of experiences, sometimes drawing but not always. However I do try get to know the land intimately and at different times of the day and it is not until I do that I feel able properly to convey my idea.

This contemplation of the outside world through the filter of imagination and memory then becomes a way looking deep into the self.
