Imagination, interpretation, resolution (04/02/2012 to 09/03/2012)
This exhibition challenges brain and perception, at the same time as offering aesthetic appreciation of both form and solution. What DO we mean by that? Rosaleen Manklow’s work is partly about challenging the mind’s power of imagination – hers and the viewer’s – to gain greater understanding of self, to perceive aesthetic experience and to bring together concepts, images, symbols from across cultures. Maxwell Jackson’s Solitaire series is also about the imagination’s power – its power not just to appreciate form, colour, shape, but also to unravel. As he says, “The intention is to echo some of the feelings experienced whilst playing Solitaire, from confident charge to hair-tearing frustration, meanwhile inviting the mind to wander in-between.” And the accompanying feelings in doing so, and perhaps – or perhaps not – arriving at a sense of ‘resolution’ are part of that emotional activity of the imagination. But both are also sort of saying “take it or leave it.”
